Genes are not a script
Explain why genetic influence does not mean a fixed individual destiny.
Genes are functional stretches of DNA; genomics considers genetic material more broadly, including interactions. Understanding life is not simply a search for one gene that determines everything. Relationships among genes and between genes and environment matter.
NHGRI distinguishes genetics from genomics partly through this broader focus. When a headline reports a gene association, ask which population was studied, how large the effect was, and whether findings were replicated. Association is not a certain prediction of an individual outcome.
Imagine similar seeds grown with different light and water. This analogy highlights environment but cannot calculate a person’s disease probability. Individual test results require the test details, family context, and qualified interpretation. Here we are learning concepts, not interpreting a genetic report.

Write three questions about a headline claiming a “gene for intelligence.”
Compare with a reference response
How was intelligence defined and measured? In which population, and with what effect size? Were environment and other genetic factors considered? These questions are more useful than instant acceptance or dismissal.
