Organise time with rhythm
Distinguish a steady pulse from a rhythmic pattern.
Tap four evenly spaced beats and repeat them. This steady reference helps organise time. Now clap only on beats one, two, and four, leaving the third silent. The reference remains while the placement of sound changes.
This exercise uses one simple setting: equal beats containing different sounds and silences. It is not a complete model of music or a claim that all traditions use the same metre. Begin with a physical distinction, then explore more varied traditions.
Write an eight-beat pattern with numbers and rests. Repeat it, change one position, and listen again. Did you change speed, placement, or loudness? Changing one feature makes comparison clearer. The page plays an original example: four even beats, then four with the third silent.
Make your understanding visible
Tap “1, 2, rest, 4” at a steady speed, then change one position.
Compare with a reference response
For example, silence beat two as well: “1, rest, rest, 4.” The speed stays constant while sound placement changes. Repeat it steadily and describe the difference.
