Define before judging
Discuss capitalism through institutions, separating definition from evaluation.
Treat capitalism as a subject of inquiry, not just praise or criticism. Our working definition focuses on private property, market exchange, and firms organising production through employment. A definition tells us what to observe; it does not establish fairness. Other scholarly traditions use different definitions.
For a fictional bakery, ask who owns the ovens, directs production, earns wages, buys the bread, and bears losses. These relationships are more informative than simply counting wealthy people. Families, governments, and nonprofits can coexist with capitalist firms.
Evaluate separately: efficiency, innovation, freedom, stability, fairness, and environmental effects. An arrangement may perform differently across these dimensions. Describe it, examine mechanisms and evidence, then state your judgment.
Make your understanding visible
Map owners, workers, customers, and regulators for a fictional café, then ask one research question.
Compare with a reference response
For example: how do prices, wages, and profits change after a competitor enters? Private ownership alone does not establish that everyone benefits.
